Mahabharat is one of the biggest shows ever produced in the history of Indian television history. This serial was telecast between 1988 and 1990. Produced and directed by B. R. Chopra this serial reached the peak of its popularity, Raj Kamal was the music director. Urdu poet Rahi Masoom Raza was the scriptwriter.
The serial is based on the original story written by Vyasa. Maganlal dresswala was the costume supplier. Each episode had about 60 minutes of air time. The title song has lyrics where 2 verses are taken from the Bhagavad Gita. Noted playback singer Mahindra Kapoor sang the verses. The epic serial is being telecast again during the lockdown and is being aired from March 28th at 7 pm every day on DD National.
DD Retro Mahabharat Serial
The story revolves around Lord Krishna who helps the Pandavas against Kauravas. The serial starts with King Bharat who gives more preference to the who has potential. Then there is a sequence of births including Bheeshma followed by Drithrastra, the Kauravas and the Pandavas. The story then moves to the childhood of Lord Krishna during which Kansa is killed.
Then there is a conflict between the Pandavas and Kauravas as Arjun wins Drupadi in the Swayamwara. She is then married to all the Pandavas, and Yudhistir is crowned as the emperor of Indraprastha. Duryodhana is insulted by Drupadi during the Rajsuya Yagna. Duryodhana then seeks revenge and tries to disrobe Droupadi then makes her go for 14 years of exile along with Pandavas this leads to the war of Mahabharat.
Arjun is enlightened by lord Krishna about the Geeta and shows him Virata Swaroopa. The show ends with the Rajyabhishek of Yudhishthir and the death of Bhishma.

The magnum opus serial created by B.R. Chopra and it is written by Pandit Narendra Sharma and DrRahi Masoom Raza. The serial is directed by both B.R. CHopra and his son Ravi Chopra. Yashwant Mahilwar was the creative director. The narrator of the show was Harish Bhimani and composed by Rajkamal. D.H. Vengurlekar was the executive producer while the cinematography was handled by Dharam Chopra. Shailendra Doke and Bhirpal Singh did the editing of the serial.
